The village of Santa Barbara da Nexe, some seven kilometres north of Faro, is one a number of places close to the Algarve's capital city to take its name from a saint. Other places include the town of São Bras de Alportel and the village of Sta Catarina. All were so named during the Moorish occupation of Southern Portugal (8th to 12th Century) so as to give protection 'from above'. By far the best known Santa Barbara landmark is the village's four hundred year-old white walled church, or to be more precise the bell tower of the church. With the advent of the IP1 motorway during the nine teen ninties, ensuring swifter and more efficient travel throughout the east and central Algarve, the bell tower has now become even more prominent, clearly viewed from the stretch of road close to the São Bras/Faro exit. The bell tower has also proved consistent subject matter for artists down the ages, and takes on an almost mystical air during winter nights.
The village church, of which the people of Santa Barbara are justly proud, clearly displays both the Gothic and Manueline style of art and architecture.

The proximity of the Mediterranean Sea greatly influences the Algarvean climate. Summers are hot and dry and winters are mild with hardly any rain (50 days with rain and 500 mm on average each year), combined with very inviting Springs and Autumns.
The sea water temperature starts at around 14ºC in January and reaches a high 22ºC in August. A pleasant sea breeze refreshes the average annual temperature of the region, which is 17,7ºC (15ºC in January and up to 28ºC or more in July and August). The Algarve can also count on around 3.000 hours of Sun during the year which makes it a favourite destination for those who fancy such a delightful climate.
As can be observed, during Summer, the temperature in the Algarve is very high (it can go over 40ºC/100ºF exceptionally) and the periods of sun are long. It is common knowledge that excess sun can cause illnesses such as skin cancer. The safest procedure is to use plenty of high-factor sunscreen, especially on children. A hat is an indispensable accessory, as are a good pair of sunglasses. It is advisable to avoid exposure to the sun during its strongest point in the day, between midday and 3 o'clock in the afternoon. In the case of sunburns or sunstroke, do seek medical attention.
We can also offer an Algarve villa nearer the beaches and tourist and sports facilities that make the Algarve coast the vibrant and varied region that accounts for its ever increasing popularity. Internationally renowned resorts, such as Quinta do Lago, Vale do Lobo, Vilamoura and Albufeira provide every imaginable entertainment and activity from casinos to deep sea fishing. We can also offer water skiing and fishing at our lakeside facilities. The Conii, influenced by Tartessos, were established by the sixth century BC in the region of the Algarve. They would be strongly influenced by the Celtici. The Phoenicians had established trading ports along the coast circa 1000 BC. The Carthaginians founded Portus Hanibalis — known today as Portimão — in circa 550 BC. The Romans in the 2nd century BC spread through the Iberian Peninsula, and many Roman ruins can still be seen in the region, notably in Lagos.
In the 5th century the Visigoths took control of the Algarve until the beginning of the Moorish invasion in 711. When the Moors conquered Lagos in 716 it was called Zawaia. Faro, which the Christian residents had called Santa Maria, was renamed Faraon, which means "the settlement of the Knights."
Due to the Moorish occupation of Iberia, the region was called "Al-Gharb Al-Andalus". Al-Gharb means "the west"; Al-Andalus is the Arabic name of muslim iberia. |
